Concrete calculation example

Number of flatmates3 people

Couple in shared housing

If you are a couple (married, civil partnership or declared partners), you submit a joint APL application. The other flatmates submit their individual applications.

Intergenerational shared housing

Shared housing with an elderly person can entitle you to APL if you have a lease and pay rent.

Flatmate change

Report any change to the CAF. An amendment to the lease is required. The APL will be recalculated.

Frequently asked questions

Can you receive APL in shared housing?

Yes, each flatmate can receive APL individually. Each person submits their own application to the CAF and the amount is calculated based on their share of the rent (total rent divided by the number of flatmates). Each flatmate must be named on the lease.

How is APL calculated in shared housing?

APL is calculated on your pro-rata share of the rent. For example, if the rent is 900 euros for 3 flatmates, your rent taken into account will be 300 euros. The APL rent ceilings are also divided by the number of flatmates.

Do you need an individual or joint lease for APL?

Both are possible. With a joint lease, each flatmate must be named on the lease. With individual leases (common in student residences), each person has their own contract. In both cases, you can apply for APL.

What happens if a flatmate leaves?

If a flatmate leaves the shared housing, the others must notify the CAF because their share of the rent changes. An amendment to the lease must be signed. The APL amount will be recalculated based on the new distribution.

Shared housing APL: couple or partners, what's the difference?

A couple (married, civil partnership or declared cohabitation) submits a joint APL application for the household. Flatmates who are not a couple each submit an individual application. The CAF considers a couple as a single beneficiary.

How much APL in shared housing?

The amount depends on your APL zone, your share of the rent and your income. On average, a flatmate can receive between 80 and 200 euros per month. Use our simulator to get a precise estimate based on your situation.
